Notes & Reviews:

Michael Rabin's musical voice may have been quiet the past forty years, but to violin aficionados his star still shines brightly. His discography is small, reflecting not only his premature death at the age of 35, but also the fact that for the last decade of Rabin's ººlife, he did not have a recording contract. All of which adds to the importance of this recently discovered trove of recordings spanning his entire career, from the earliest extant recording when he was eleven years of age to one of his fi nal live performances in 1971, the year before he died. These recordings, bookends to a remarkable life and career, give the listener a unique opportunity to revisit not only the beauty of his playing, but also to follow his transition from boy wonder to mature artist. The journey, no less than the playing, is deeply moving.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
Perhaps the most valuable recordings here are from the suppressed final disc of encores Rabin recorded January 3, 1961, for Capitol. It boggles the mind why they were not released: they are flawless performances of repertoire that Rabin was closely identified with. He is very poetic in Debussy's 'Girl with the Flaxen Hair', and he really sparkles in William Kroll's 'Banjo and Fiddle' and Sarasate's silly Introduction and Tarantelle.
