Notes & Reviews:

To celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth of the great German conductor Hermann Scherchen, Tahra assembled this collection, which includes only previously unissued recordings (1945 to 1965). Scherchen (1891-1966) was one of the leading conductors in the middle part of the twentieth century, especially valued for his pioneering performances of contemporary music. He was essentially self-taught as a musician. After starting out in his teens as a violist in the Blüthner Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic, he made his conducting début in 1912 and went on to enjoy a fascinatingly diverse career that included teaching and composing.
