Notes & Reviews:

At the junction of madrigal, opera, and intermezzo, Il Combattimento di Tancredi & Clorinda marks a clear milestone in the evolution of Monteverdi's full attention to the emotions in the combination oratione - armonia. Shown for the first time at the Carnival of Venice in 1624, and published in 1638 in the "Eighth Book of Madrigals of War and Love," the Combattimento innovates by its multiplicity of feelings and contradictory moods that are at the heart of the poem "Jerusalem Delivered" by Torquato Tasso. This stunning masterpiece is supplemented by the mini-opera Il carro de fedeltà d'amore by Paolo Quagliati and the "Paraphrase on the madrigal Il Combattimento by Monteverdi," composed in 1969 by Alexander Goehr.
