Notes & Reviews:

A member of one of the most important English musical dynasties of the 19th and 20th centuries, Eugene Goossens trained as a violinist and composer but gained fame as a conductor. His Sonata No. 1 integrates a personal style with the influences of Debussy and Ravel, the improvisatory Lyric Poem being from the same period. Dedicated to Jascha Heifetz, the dramatic extremes of the Sonata No. 2 range from brooding melancholy to affirmative luminosity, sharing a "lyrical intensity" with the Romance. Robert Gibbs is a guest leader for the BBC Philharmonic, Royal Opera House, Nederlands Ballet and the New Queen's Hall orchestras. He often performs as soloist for ballet, including Vivaldi's The Four Seasons for Birmingham Royal Ballet, works by Kreisler, Massenet and Ravel for the Royal Ballet, and Stravinsky and Bach for New York City Ballet.

David's Review Corner
The thematic material has that feel of familiarity with other composers, and if you enjoy the music of Bax, this will be much to your liking. The more extended Second - well in excess of thirty minutes - ends in one of the disc's rare moments of animated and overt brilliance. He began work on the Lyric Poem in the year after the first sonata, originally scoring it for violin and orchestra, Bax again coming to mind. My favourite track is with the Romance from the opera, Don Juan de Manara, a piece that you could include among your salon evergreens. Though the violin part is not technically demanding, creating these long flowing lines can be taxing, and in this UK duo Robert Gibbs is the much experienced soloist who provides everything required. He has a fine piano partner in the Hungarian-born, Gusztav Fenyo. Very good sound.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
This new exceptionally-well-played-and recorded Naxos is billed as Goossens's complete music for violin and piano. It collects the two full-scale sonatas as well as three short items: Lyric Poem, Romance from Don Juan de Manara, and a two-minute 'Old Chinese Folk- Song'. All these works date from 1918 to 1937 - the first half of Goossens's career. Everything here is cunningly put together, sits comfortably on the ear as on the instruments, and makes for very enjoyable listening. Allegros offer long-spanning impassioned violin melodies over rippling, sensuous piano arpeggios. Slow movements are opulent and dreamy - the First Sonata's molto adagio is particularly lovely - with delicately embellished melodic lines and sighing figures, though steady-pulsed and measured enough to maintain forward motion.

BBC Music Magazine, September 2012
Imagine the distinctive chromaticism of Delius and Bridge welded seamlessly together. That should give you some idea of what to expect from this fine recital of indelibly English chamber morsels.

MusicWeb International, June 2012
An excellent collection; passionate interpretations of major works played with great skill presented in fine sound - a winner.
