Erwin Schulhoff absorbed a wide range of musical styles. The jazz-inspired Partita includes witty takes on the Tango, Foxtrot and Shimmy. Further synthesis comes in the Suite No. 3 which adapts folk and jazz influences in a bracingly novel way, while the Variations and Fugue reveals indebtedness to Debussy, with whom Schulhoff studied. Caroline Weichert has appeared regularly as a soloist with orchestras such as the Baden-Baden Philharmonic and the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie. She received a Discobole award from the Académie du Disque Français for her recording début featuring works by Shostakovich in 2007.

Weichert's technique is good, but her style is detached and sometimes mechanical; it's not idiomatic for Schulhoff. The Suite No. 3 for the Left Hand is quite the piece: interesting, with good themes and textures. It's an excellent study in phrasing and dynamics, and Weichert is at her interpretive best here. The Variations and Fugue has a rich (Dorian) theme and is a very satisfying piece; from 1913, it precedes Schulhoff's forays into jazz and is influenced by Debussy. Here, still, Weichert is crisp and clinical much of the time (Variation 9 is scintillating, at least). The sound is a little nasal - not rich, but not unpleasant. Oddly phrased notes in English and German.
