Notes & Reviews:

This release celebrates the music of Castelnuovo-Tedesco who is gaining increasing attention outside the Americas. The inspiration behind much of this Italian composer's music for the classical guitar came from the Spanish virtuoso Andrés Segovia, who he met at the 1932 Venice International Festival of Music. The two men must have struck up a close bond, for the composer would go on to write over 100 works for the instrument. Chief among them is undoubtedly the Concerto No.1 in D Op.99, but Castelnuovo-Tedesco also wrote some very fine solo repertoire to which this Newton Classics release is dedicated.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
I'm not familiar with Renato Samuelli; but he is, or was, a fine player, with a solid technique and an excellent feel for this music. He has a natural, unforced rubato, and a nice sense of color. I'm glad to have this recording.

Another Great Re-issue
Renato Samuelli – Castelnuovo –Tedesco/Guitar Works – Newton Classics

Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco first began writing guitar music after hearing Segovia play; he continued to compose for solo guitar and guitar and orchestra until his passing more than thirty years later in 1968. This excellent re-issue of his music for solo guitar includes both early work and some of his final compositions, purportedly written as “studies for amateur guitarists”. (In point of practical fact, any guitarist who can play music difficult, especially Book II, is probably maintaining his or her “amateur” status by choice.)

None of this sounds easy to play, but Renato Samuelli makes it seem that way. From the “simplest” studies/exercises to the extremely difficult “Capriccio ‘Omaggio a Paganini’ Op. 85”, Mr. Samuelli’s playing is uniformly excellent and effortless, the recorded sound marred only slightly by occasional string noise. One might wonder, then, why the record company chose to include neither a photo of nor biographical information about Mr. Samuelli. Unless he’s in some European version of the witness protection program, this does a disservice to artist and listening public alike.

After hearing “Guitar Works” performed by Renato Samuelli, it’s easy to understand why the solo guitar music of Castelnuovo-Tedesco has become a standard feature in the requirements of university guitar programs and the recital repertoire of nearly every aspiring concert guitarist. It can sometimes make for a challenging listening experience, but this music remains fresh, relevant and interesting almost 45 years after it was written.
