Notes & Reviews:
In 1785, age 53 and at the height of fame, Haydn received a commission to write ceremonial music for Good Friday. The resulting instrumental composition was a triumph. Some years later while, Haydn stumbled upon a vocal arrangement of the work set to excerpts of Ramler's poem Der Tod Jesu. He revised that work and the ensuing oratorio, published in 1801 exceeded all popularity of the previous version and has become one of the composer's most performed works.
