Notes & Reviews:

With his early compositions of the 1970s, Wolfgang Rihm opened up new perspectives for musical development by advocating a musical aesthetic that offered liberation from the constraints of the prevailing avant-garde ideology of the time. This disc from the RIASKammerchor led by Hans-Christoph Rademann includes his early Fragmenta Passionis (written when Rihm was only 16), the Sieben Passions-texte and the major half-hour-long work Astralis of 2001. These three works are linked above all by their expressive and diverse treatment of the possibilities of the human voice and at the same time by their reflection on traditional forms and genres of musical history. In March 2012, Wolfgang Rihm celebrates his 60th birthday.

"Regardless of the composer’s intentions, this recording is impressive. The balance of the few instruments against the chorus and Rademann’s disciplined control of dynamics are almost cosmological in nature. One is thus left with a sense of just how small man is in the grander scheme of being; and the impact of the performance is, to say the least, spooky... Whether or not harmonia mundi deliberately planned to release this recording during Lent, its meditative qualities are definitely appropriate to the season; but the musical qualities are likely to appeal to the serious listener regardless of any religious dispositions or affiliations." -Examiner.com

The Independent
The RIAS Kammerchor's forces deftly apply the misty tonalities here.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
Still, this is an excellent album for anyone who can handle some dissonance and slow-paced writing. The singing is superb, even if the diction doesn't come across very clearly (probably more the engineering than in the singing). Notes and texts in German, French, and English - and thank God for companies who still supply them!
