Album Summary
Conductor Ensemble ComposersNotes & Reviews:
An outstanding musical personality of the period around 1500, Heinrich Isaac (c 1450-1517) was one of the most universal and versatile of all the earlier composers and an important representative of the Netherlandish School. Altogether a cosmopolitan in the modern sense, he led a colorful life that is reflected in compositions in all the musical forms and styles of his time using the most important languages of Europe, in a way that was comparable only with Orlande de Lassus almost 100 years later. Contemporary reports attest to Isaac's great cultivation and amiable relations with fellow musicians and subordinates alike, seeming to characterize him as a person who had risen far above the norms of his time. One reason for that undoubtedly lay in the fact that Isaac, unlike most of his colleagues, was not a cleric and had never been subjected to the narrow intellectual confines of a church choir.
American Record Guide, September / October 2012
Mr Barker thought that too many of the chant intonations were performed by the treble voices (in this case, women). In most of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and even into the baroque, chant was actually more likely to have been sung by the choirboys trained in the church, monastery, and cathedral schools than by the adult clerics, so that the women may be a suitable substitute for a sonority that Isaac would have expected. A number of recordings by the Schola Hungarica have either women or children singing chant, a wonderful contrast to all those monks.
