Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Beethoven's Fourth and Fifth Concertos are the openings - no previous classical concerto had announced itself with the soloist alone. The Fourth opens with an exquisitely gentle theme, poetic and speculative, and in the Fifth with a series of flourishes, a veritable explosion of virtuosity, the like of which had never been heard before.
