Notes & Reviews:
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
David Philip Hefti's music is deeply chromatic. Harmonically and melodically dense sections are common, as are microtones. Owing to the frequency of these compositional techniques, the works on the program exhibit similar moods but use different instruments. The likeness of the pieces to each other detracts from the expressive nature of Hefti's music. The growth expressed through the addition of quarter and microtones complements the larger natural intervals used. The accelerating orchestra in I of Gegenklang, however, has the same urgency and dramatic, short lines as the ones in Klangbogen.
