Notes & Reviews:

Creator Spiritus is the latest collaboration between GRAMMY® Award winning conductor Paul Hillier and celebrated Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The disc features a carefully selected collection of Pärt's choral and instrumental chamber music, drawn from different periods in the composer's career. Leading his celebrated vocal ensembles Theatre of Voices and Ars Nova Copenhagen and joined by the NYYD Quartet and long-time collaborator organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent, Hillier produces another powerful recording of ethereal sacred music.

"It is no surprise that the virtuosic singers in Theatre of Voices and Ars Nova Copenhagen are often to be found in early music ensembles...The NYYD Quartet and organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent add sonic variety to this pure, minimalist enterprise." -The Observer

"Yet another brilliant Arvo Pärt programme from Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices, Creator Spiritus intersperses religious choral works from different eras of the composer's career with chamber-music pieces of comparable tone and piety, building to the climactic 26-minute "Stabat Mater"... It's the 'Stabat Mater' which impresses most, a sublime concord of voices and strings in Pärt's characteristic tintinnabulate flotation." -The Independent

Irish Times
Hillier and his colleagues are fully at ease with the slowness of undertow and sense of near-repose that the unfolding self-similarity creates in so many of the pieces here. And they rightly often glory in the glowing resonances they're presented with. The patient, softly-contoured gentleness they bring to the start of The Deer's Cry is mesmerising and makes the stresses of its later insistence - climax seems too strong a word - all the more effective.

Gramophone Magazine
Theatre of Voices have lived and breathed Part's music for over two decades but it is perhaps the warmth and beauty of the voices of Ars Nova Copenhagen that is most immediately striking here.

American Record Guide, September / October 2012
The 1985 Stabat Mater, the oldest piece on the program, is one of his purest and loveliest works, with ethereal strings and plaintive voices sympathizing with the Virgin's sadness as she stands at the foot of the cross. Mary may have been gazing upward, but the music looks down, casting a serene glow on the sad, agonizing sacrifice that had to be made below.
