Notes & Reviews:

This outstanding recording features performances of two of the great Schubert string quartets from the UK based Endellion String Quartet, from whom Warner Classics released the complete Beethoven quartets and quintets in the 2008-2009 season in celebration of the ESQ's 30th anniversary (item 2564694713, UPC 825646947133).
"At every point the Endellions demonstrate their extra maturity. They consistently play with inner depth and dedication, and employ the widest dynamic range, with whispered pianissimos as intense as the biting fortissimos." Edward Greenfield, Gramophone 2009 Editors Choice (Beethoven String Quartets, Warner Classics)

American Record Guide, September / October 2012
These two quartets are probably Schubert's most popular, and there are several excellent recordings available of each (Overview, N/D 2003). I'd add these fine performances by the Endellion Quartet to the list; they were recorded in 1996 in London in very good sound. The performances are beautifully balanced so that every instrumental line can easily be heard, their tone is superb and never coarse, and their interpretations are quite dramatic, for instance in Quartet 14 (Death and the Maiden). Tempos are conventional but strictly adhered to, notably in fast movements like the finale of Death and the Maiden. It's marked Presto and that's how these young folks play it.
