Thomas Newman brings his flair for crafting lighthearted but evocative music to his score for John Madden's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Reflecting the film's tale of British retirees who move to an Indian hotel, Newman incorporates sitar, tablas, and other setting-appropriate elements into his score, and makes them sound completely natural (not a surprise, since he often uses instruments from around the world in his music). Tracks like "This Is the Day," "Cricket Spell," and the title track have melodies and arrangements that tumble and glide effortlessly in a way that's pure Newman, resulting in a soundtrack that's as engaging in its own right as it is in the film. ~ Heather Phares
