Notes & Reviews:
This is brass band music of the American Civil War, performed by the Coates Brass Band, 47th PA Vol. Infantry Regimental Band on period instruments and mouthpieces.
American Record Guide, November/December 2012
I'm not going to say that this music is high art, but it is certainly well performed on what I can only imagine are very difficult instruments to play. The informative liner notes and performance editions of the music were prepared by baritone player and Assistant Professor of Musicology at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Dr Michael O'Connor. The conductor of the Coates Brass Band is Dr Douglas Hedwig, a retired trumpeter from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. This disc is clearly meant for brass band and Civil War enthusiasts with an interest in the historical significance and performance practice of this music. A little goes a long way.
Recording information: Pawling, NY (08/11/2011-08/13/2011).
