Notes & Reviews:

Carolyn Sampson, now the best British early music soprano by quite some distance' [Gramophone] Carolyn Sampson made her opera debut with English National Opera in Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea and returned to sing Tanterabogus in The Fairy Queen with the company in London and Barcelona. She is a renowned concert soloist, and has concertized extensively in the US and Europe. She now turns her formidable talent towards the interpretation of the works of Thomas-Louis Bourgeois. Featured on this disc is Les Sirènes, a work which depicts the famous episode in Ulysses' prolonged voyage in The Odyssey

Gramophone Magazine, August 2012
In fresh, free voice, Carolyn Sampson does Bourgeois proud. She understands that airy grace and languid sensuality are of the essence, but never falls into the trap of winsomeness. Singing in clear French, she phrases alluringly...points key words without exaggeration and relishes the opportunities for dramatisation....in such delectable performances they make a welcome discovery.

Fanfare Magazine
Indeed, if there is any criticism one can make of this music, it is that after a while many of the cantata movements begin to sound like ones you've already heard, giving a sense of musical déjà vu. Despite his imagination in melodic construction and other elements, Bourgeois (like every other composer of his time, Handel and Bach included) knew when he had a hit, and so was careful to include elements of that music in future productions. Nevertheless, there is more than enough variety here to please almost any lover of Baroque music and even some of you who tend to be suspicious of its artificialities. Highly recommended.

American Record Guide, September / October 2012
That is just the meat for Sampson, who is skilled at applying her full, ripe voice with rich nuance and assertiveness. She is vigorously supported by an ensemble of six versatile instrumentalists.

Lovers of French Baroque music should rush to be the first kid on the block to have rare music by this hitherto-ignored composer. Good notes; full texts with translation.
