Volume 3 in the Schumann solo piano series focuses on the output of "Character Pieces" - a genre Schumann engaged in mostly during the early 1830s. Also included are several pieces that only existed in manuscript form and have never before been released. The entire series production and booklet notes are the work of the highly respected Schumann scholar Joachim Draheim, who has provided not only invaluable biographical and historical background but has had access to many previously unpublished manuscripts and Schumann's own corrections and revisions to the printed scores.

My initial impression of Uhlig's playing registered his technical strength and emotional coolness (Nov/Dec 2010). The quality of this release has caused me to warm incrementally towards him: I am now more impressed with his precision and control and am better able to discern emotion in the subtle shadings of his dynamics and attacks.

Uhlig's playing is in many ways exemplary: graceful, light of touch, strong of srping and in excellent control of voicing while navigating Schumann's intricate textures...[His] approach is unsentimental and straightforward; but despite many beauties, it would be nice to hear slightly more highlighting of the sheer whimsy in Schumann's writing.
