The novelty on this recording is the partially complete early Piano Concerto in E flat Wo04 4 by the teenage Beethoven. This is very much the work of a talented youth learning his craft. We are securely in the world of the mid-eighteenth-century classical concerto, and the effort is neither a slavish copy of the typical concerto Beethoven would have heard in Bonn, nor is it anything world-changing. It is, though, a diverting piece, bristling with all sorts of invention and many beautiful, tender moments that are quite remarkable in such a youthful enterprise.
