Notes & Reviews:

Strongly inclined towards neoromanticism, Richard Danielpour's music is a rich unity of energy, intensity, and serenity. First Light reveals these elements perfectly with its rhythmically charged writing contrasting with hypnotic chant melodies. The Awakened Heart is a kaleidoscopic three-movement work that ranges from darkness and passion through a stately chorale to an exuberant and breathless conclusion. Symphony No. 3 charts a triumphant ascent from "the dream of death and our own fearful existence" to a belief "in a world of hope and love." "Danielpour is an outstanding composer for any time - one who knows how to communicate deep, important emotions through simple, direct means." (The New York Daily News)

Fanfare Magazine
I have had occasion to make some negative comments about other Gerard Schwarz recordings, either in terms of interpretation or, more commonly, the awful sound quality, but neither afflicts this recording. Schwarz's performances are entirely convincing, dramatic and lyrical in turn, with not a single moment played unconvincingly. If your reaction to Esham's singing and/or the quality of the symphony are more positive than mine, you will not be disappointed in acquiring this CD.

American Record Guide, September / October 2012
The Awakened Heart (1990) could be considered a symphony in all but name. It has three impressive movements. It opens with a tightly argued allegro, moves through an expressive slow movement with another chorale, and concludes with an energetic transformation of previous material. I could do without the pretentious movement titles, but heard in purely symphonic terms this work could easily take its place in the better American symphonic repertoire.
