The most attractive voice in the cast is that of Jessica Glatte (Pulcinella), a satisfactory operetta soprano - clean tone, sufficient glitter on top (especially good in the first-act finale), clear words and a sympathetic manner... Opposite Glatte in the title role, mezzo-soprano Jana Frey has a smooth, soft-grained sound, a degree of velvet in the tone and a light touch, but not quite the essential charm.
Prinz Methusalem is now the 3rd discovery of an unknown operetta by Strauss on cpo. Strauss deliberately designed his Methusalem for the Paris stage. After a French version of Die Fledermaus was already in preparation, he set his hopes on his very first Paris premiere, but the contract was never signed, with the result that this operetta first saw the light of the stage world in Vienna.Notes & Reviews:
