Notes & Reviews:
Western art music tradition in South Africa is perhaps not well-known internationally but a rich tradition of excellence is evidenced by this recording: recorded and produced in South Africa and featuring South African artists. Clarinetist Maria du Toit takes the listener on a journey with her Luminous Shade project. Beginning with Bozza's Paris, through Hofmeyr's South Africa, Rheinberger's Germany, Martino's USA, Negrea's Romania and Bassi's Italy. By turns lyrical and virtuosic, du Toit and her collaborator, pianist Nina Schumann, open up the often elusive clarinet sound to its full depth and breadth.
American Record Guide, November/December 2012
Schumann is an excellent pianist, but she comes across as an accompanist rather than an artistic collaborator. Apart from a few brilliant moments, she declines to compete with Du Toit for presence on the stage. The music deserves more.
