Notes & Reviews:

Jonathan Leshnoff is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary American music, and his lyricism is accompanied by vibrant expressive qualities. The String Quartet No. 2 reflects the personal qualities of those who commissioned it with originality and vitality, Leshnoff embracing both mystery and klezmerinspired writing. Seven Glances at a Mirage creates shifting perspectives and contrasted sonorities, whilst Cosmic Variations on a Haunted Theme alternates between hints of Bachian chorales and Bartókinspired drama. ... without a chance is a response to 9/11, where abrupt rhythms are movingly resolved. "Leshnoff is excitingly 'the real deal'.'' (Fanfare on 8.559398)

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
Leshnoff's quartet benefits from more personal sounding and surprising turns of phrase and harmony, though it too sometimes indulges in certain stock references to other 20th Century music that seem to intrude rather than augment his own voice. The performances are very fine.
