Notes & Reviews:

The New York Piano Quartet -- violinist Elmira Darvarova, violist Ronald Carbone, cellist Samuel Magill, and pianist Linda Hall, all current or former members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra -- is the core ensemble of the New York Chamber Music Festival, held every September on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

One of the highlights of the 2011 season was a program built around the single completed `first` movement of Gustav Mahler's Piano Quartet and two strongly clashing realizations of the sketches of the second movement scherzo -- a `traditional` completion by Friedrich Luhl-Dolgorukiy and Alfred Schnittke's distinctive, modernistic vision of the work.

Eight original works inspired by Mahler's music and environs, many of which were premiered during that concert, receive their world-premiere recordings, including a work by exciting young Chinese composer Wang Jie from which this program takes its title.
