Notes & Reviews:
Past and present come together in this vibrant release from Sono Luminus, But Not Forgotten: Music by African-American Composers for Clarinet & Piano, as clarinetist Marcus Eley, and pianist Lucerne DeSa display the timeless class and musical stylings of composers whose music runs rich with the knowledge and desire of gifts to be returned through the notes on a page, and the instrument in one's hand. Marcus Eley is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Music in clarinet, and studied at the Hochschule fuer Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria. He has performed as a soloist with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Louisville Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. On his New York debut recital in Weill Recital Hall, The New York Times cited his performance as " ...expert, songful, and straightforward."
The WSCL Blog
Eley focuses on music for clarinet and piano by African-American Composers. A mixture of very melodic pieces and... some challenging modern chamber works as well. A gift of music that can also be a thoughtful exploration of ethnic identity and accomplishment as well.
Gramophone
Add in Lucerne DeSa's full bodied, elegant playing and the gratifying natural acoustic at Endler Concert Hall on the campus of the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa's Western Cape Winelands, and the result is an exceptional musical experience in every way. The booklet notes are documentary in authority and the sound is of the highest audiophile quality.
Recording information: Endler Hall, Stellenbosch University, South Africa (07/13/2009).
