Album Summary

>Vinci, Leonardo : La Partenope, opera in 3 acts
Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

World premiere recording featuring a superb performance presented by Antonio Florio and a cast of true Baroque specialists. This opera waited almost three centuries before its rediscovery by Antonio Florio and the Turchini orchestra. Founded in 1987 by Antonio Florio, the ensemble I Turchini consists of instrumentalists and singers living and working in Naples who specialize in the performance of Neapolitan music from the 17th and 18th centuries and in the rediscovery of music by highly-gifted composers who are now largely unknown.

Gramophone Magazine, October 2012
Albeit truncated and uneven, this confirms Vinci as a meritorious opera composer.

International Record Review, October 2012
The singing here is above all dramatically coloured...Prina has exceptional technical control and the cumulative addition of ornaments throughout her arias is genuinely exciting...Partenope is a sure bet for all lovers of Baroque opera, tightly controlled by Florio, dominated by the indomitable Prina, and a thrilling testimony to a Vinci whose prodigious talents are only just being rediscovered.

Reviews

Marvelous recording of this early opera
This two disc set tells the story of Partenope (re-read your early Greek mythology – she was one of the sires that tempted Odysseus), whom myth credits with the founding of Naples. This is a very early opera, conducted by Antonio Florio, featuring Sonia Prina, Maria Grazia Schiavo (she is *excellent*), Stefano Ferrari, Eufemia Tufano, Maria Ercoland, and Charles Do Santos. The cast is well chosen, as their voices blend together beautifully, and the music itself flows seemingly effortlessly from them. I can’t say enough about the recording quality – the sound jumps from the speakers and is full-bodied and lifelike. It is just simply amazing.

The operatic material is straight-forward if you are up on your mythology, otherwise a little reading might be in order to get the overall story in mind while you are listening. The liner notes are simple, informative, and provide just enough context to make the listening experience more meaningful.

All that being said, this is an audio treat, and the pictures in the included booklet definitely made this listener wish he could have seen the production in person. This is wonderful music, sung by very talented performers. If you like early music, and particularly early opera, then I would strongly recommend this disc. It is quite simply excellent.
