France's symphonic tradition may not compare in number to Germany's, but it has produced its fair share of impressive works. And while less famous than some of his countrymen, late starter Albert Roussel was an important and compelling composer whose works deftly blended Classical structures with a decidedly 20th-century sensibility. This recording traces the entire development of his symphonic style with assured played by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Marek Janowski.

Master Symphonist
Collectors have come to expect topnotch results from conductor, Marek Janowski. This set of the four symphonies by Albert Roussel clearly embodies the conductor’s ethos: thoughtful, unhysterical music making. There is great care exercised regarding tempo
relationships, dynamics and most saliently, clarifying complex textures. To be sure, there may be more hard driven accounts of these works, especially #3 and #4, but none more logically worked out. Throughout, the O.P. de Radio France is responsive to Janowski’s ideas. Originally recorded by RCA in 1996, the set is excellently engineered. Packaging and liner notes cannot be faulted.
