Giovanni Legrenzi was one of the Baroque period's most important figures, having enjoyed wide success in opera, oratorio, cantata, and chamber music. This release takes as its subject the final three of Legrenzi's five large instrumental collections, works which tackled common chamber forms and invested them with inventive tonal sense, melodically and rhythmically vigorous themes, and intricate but expressive counterpoint.

Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca's disc of Vivaldi cello concertos gave me much pleasure; it represented all that is best in playing such music one to a part, namely light and clear textures, nimble virtuosity, a good natural balance and a sense that the players were really enjoying themselves.

CPO has recorded quite a few of Legrenzi's Opus 2 sonatas, which Mr Schwartz quite liked (M/A 2005 - performed with "elegance and brilliance"). If you have that CD, this one would not overlap with it at all. The performance here is quite vigorous, with full sound. This is a small orchestra - not quite a chamber orchestra, perhaps, with 11 players, but still larger than the four or five instruments that might have been used. The sound is good, and so are the notes.
