Notes & Reviews:
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
It has become routine for contemporary players to offer performances and recordings of Bach's entire Goldberg Variations. It is not known whether Bach's intended it to be presented that way. There is ample evidence that in 17th and 18th Century extended performances by virtuoso performers were partly or entirely improvised. When I first discovered the Goldberg Variations at age 11 or 12 I listened to them in their entirety every night for some time. We hyper-evolved 21st century homo sapiens are up to the task, and here are three recordings that you probably have not heard yet, two on piano and one on harpsichord.
