Notes & Reviews:

Awakenings features 2 extraordinary works by composers from the Pioneer Valley region of Western Massachusetts. Shofar is an intensely dramatic and deeply moving oratorio inspired by the 4 arresting calls of the shofar. Why I Wake Early draws text from the poetry of Oliver. Both pieces have a similar underlying cyclical structure, moving from light through darkness then awakening, with a renewed sense of restoration.

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
The engineers came up with a chilly, nonreverberant sound frame that's serviceable but doesn't add much in the way of atmosphere. Both works - especially Shofar - could have used more ambient color. The music is selfexplanatory, so you won't need much beyond the texts to follow it. What written notes there are in the booklet get squeezed in between the librettos.
