Notes & Reviews:

The Soviet musical establishment considered Kabalevsky a "dream composer," as his compositions fit the prescribed formula for proper Russian music: bright, straightforward, folk-based works which made few demands on the listener's intellect. Still, his gifts as a melodist and orchestrator made him immensely popular in his time. This re-release offers some of his finest works, including the Romeo and Juliet symphonic suite.

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
The short tone-poem Spring has a bit more atmosphere and expressive potential than some of the other music on the program, and Lapunov and his players bring it off just a well. And at the very end, we get the one piece by Kabalevsky that everybody knows, the ColasBreugnon Overture. Lapunov's interpretation strikes me as wilder than the classic Reiner (RCA) recording - and I kind of like it that way.
