Trombone Grande

Album Summary

Conductor Ensemble Composers

Notes & Reviews:

Wim Becu, as the guiding spirit of the Ensemble Oltremontano and soloist on this CD, imbues the Baroque bass trombone with an unparalleled vitality and virtuosity. Not without reason is he counted among the best in his field, if not the best bass trombone player ever on the Baroque trombone! The newly-released CD Trombone Grande is exciting from every point of view - many different tone colours and arrangements, as well as very varied compositions, offer you an interesting and entertaining listening pleasure. As well as sound and coherent interpretations of the individual works, the bass trombone is at the centre - rightly so! There has never been a CD dedicated to such a wide-ranging collection of works. For the bass trombone is mostly used as a harmonic base, or for doubling the bass voice. Thus the performance of the diminution by Francesco Rognoni on Susane un jour certainly represents a highlight of bass trombone virtuosity. Technically brilliant, radiant yet touchingly soft in sound are the highly virtuoso passages which Wim Becu lures from his instrument. Treat yourself and your ear to this rarity! The title of the CD refers to the customary name at the time for the Baroque bass trombone because of its size. Loosely translated, it can also mean 'magnificent trombone'!

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
The works are early 17th-Century canzonas and sonatas, plus a couple vocal transcriptions. Music from this period sounds experimental and rather awkward to me, as if the composers were searching for a coherent language. To make up for the similarities of the pieces, the group changes instrumentation from piece to piece. Frescobaldi's Canzona VII has bass sackbut and organ; Giovanni Fontana's Sonata XIII has two cornettos, bass sackbut, and organ; Bartolomeo de Selma y Salaverde's Canzona XXIII has cello, bass sackbut, and organ. All of the performers and their readings are superb. Excellent notes and sound.
