Notes & Reviews:
Tchaikovsky's ballet "The sleeping Beauty" was an instant success when it had its world premiere in 1890 at the famous Mariinsky theatre in St. Petersburg. The work achieved such popularity that later composers began to arrange it. The most famous example is the piano arrangement created by Sergei Rachmaninov at the young age of 17. This world premiere recording features the legendary Russian piano duo, husband and wife Olga and Angrej Hoteev.
American Record Guide, March / April 2013
It amounts to 22 tracks of widely varying lengths. Hoteev is joined by his wife in a committed performance that introduces previously unrecorded musical arrangements in the best possible light. Musically, this recording works quite well. It starts out with the powerful Prologue music and held my interest all the way through. Most of the familiar music from the ballet is included, and there are some wonderful transcriptions of the harp parts especially. The performances and recording are both of top quality and build to climaxes in each section. The grand finale has to be the most famous waltz Tchaikovsky ever wrote. There is a good performance of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite.
