Album Summary
Performer
Srdjan Bulat (Guitar)
Notes & Reviews:
This selection ranges from the romanticism of Francisco Tárrega, the Spanish impressionism of Albéniz's Mallorca and the neo-romanticism of the contemporary Croatian composer, Stjepan Sulek, to Rodrigo's masterly evocation of the gardens of the Alhambra Palace in Granada and Britten's revolutionary Nocturnal after John Dowland. Croatian guitarist Srdjan Bulat has won numerous prestigious awards, and was winner of the Certamen Tárrega 2011 which included a special award for his performance of the work of Francisco Tárrega.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
The recital closes with the Britten, one of the most beautiful and important works of the modern guitar repertory. Bulat delivers a fine performance, more like Julian Bream's classic performance than Alberto Mesirca's, which is just as fine but quite different (see below). Particularly fine is the final passacaglia, as E phrygian battles with E major, finally resolving into Dowland's heartbreaking 'Come, Heavy Sleep'. It's a remarkable end to a fine performance.
