Notes & Reviews:

Named after an eminent scribe at the court in Madrid, the Guerra Manuscript contains over one hundred secular songs from the second half of the seventeenth century. The anthology is a valuable repository of music from anonymous sources but also from Spain's very finest Baroque composers, such as Juan Hidalgo and José Marín. These expressive songs, largely on poetic and mythological themes, are performed by some of the world's leading interpreters of the genre, whose first volume in this series [8.570135] received great acclaim. The tenor Juan Sancho has collaborated with conductors including William Christie, Gustav Leonhardt, Jordi Savall, Andrea Marcon, Fabio Biondi, Allan Curtis, Richard Egarr and Diego Fasolis. Founded and directed by the Galician harpist Manuel Vilas, the Ars Atlántica ensemble is focused on Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Latin American music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
Following the release last year of volume 1 (July/Aug 2011: 252), this is the second collection of tonos humanos (secular songs) found in an extensive manuscript collection compiled by José Miguel Guerra, who worked as a copyist in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Rather than the solo soprano on the earlier recording, Juan Sancho offers elegant interpretations of these Spanish love songs, filled with infectious melodies and rhythms. To the harp, played as in the previous release by Manuel Vilas, this new volume adds Eligio Luis Quinteiro on baroque guitars. In contrast to Volume 1, for which only texts in Spanish were available, Naxos has complete texts and translations as a download. As much as I enjoyed the first volume, the sequel is as good or better.

Songs like these are relatively unknown. That makes this disc most welcome. I urge every reader to explore this repertoire. This disc is full of gems, and I am pretty sure that once you have heard them you will be longing for more.
