Notes & Reviews:

The music on this album finds itself out of doors - in the moonlight with Debussy, beneath the night sky with Grieg, or out among the people in Béla Bartók's Im Freien, from which the title of this recording is taken. LAWO Classics and pianist Nils Anders Mortensen used Borge Church as a recording location, set amidst the dramatic mountain landscape of the Lofoten Islands.

After winning piano competitions both in Norway (Young Pianist Competition, 1986) and abroad (Hannover, Salzburg, and Italy), and giving concerts with major symphony orchestras, Mortensen settled in Alta in the far north of Norway, where he continues to pursue his career. In 2011, he accompanied mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland on her recording Veslemøy synsk, which was nominated for a Grammy® Award.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
The production values are quite high: excellent recorded sound (in a church somewhere near the Arctic Circle), interesting and well-done packaging and good booklet notes. It has an outdoors theme and is titled Im Frien which is German for Bartok's Out of Doors. Whether at night ('Clair de Lune', 'Notturno') or celebrating ('L'Isle Joyeuse') or telling stories (Ballad), Mortensen's playing is full of color, with an exceptionally wide dynamic range.
