American Record Guide, March / April 2013
Here's a very interesting, accomplished, and distinctly different account of Haydn's famous Nelson Mass from one of England's very best boy-treble cathedral choirs. This performance, unlike any other I've heard, reflects Haydn's original orchestral design. You will no doubt find 13-year-old head chorister Jonty Ward quite impressive, in a highly demanding role that you've heard up to now only from female sopranos. The other soloists are also excellent. His delivery is seemingly effortless, highly musical, and powerful enough to be heard over the music's often dense orchestral and choral textures. Ward's remarkable singing in solo roles has been preserved in several other Novum recordings, including an acclaimed account of Mozart's Requiem. The rest of the lads also sing supremely well, with the kind of robust delivery. Their lay clerks balance them nicely, and together they make for thrilling choral execution from beginning to end - particularly in the magnificent fugues that conclude the Gloria and Agnus Dei. The New Century Baroque orchestra (a period ensemble) plays impeccably, with excitement and sweet sonorities. Sound quality and booklet are beyond reproach. If you're up for a singularly splendid new take on this revered classic, you really need to hear this.
