Notes & Reviews:

Alfredo Casella identified three different periods in his composing career, and this disc features one work from each. The Suite in C major is early Casella, a fascinating combination of influences from the French Baroque through Domenico Scarlatti to Mahler. War Pages are images of the horrific mechanized warfare of 1914-18, as seen on silent cinema newsreels: among the music's admirers was Puccini. Casella himself felt that the Concerto, Op. 61 - a commission for the fiftieth birthday of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra - was his 'most complete achievement in the field of orchestral music'. In 2002 Francesco La Vecchia was appointed Artistic Director and Resident Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma. Under his leadership the orchestra has rapidly achieved success in Europe and in highly successful tours to St Petersburg, Madrid, Belgrade, Brussels, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, London, Athens, Berlin, Beijing and Shanghai.

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
Playing, interpretation, and sound are all good. Previously, I was lukewarm about Casella, knowing mostly his symphonic poem Italia, which struck me as skilled tourist's music. This pioneering Naxos survey of the Italian symphonic tradition has opened my ears to a worthwhile composer.

Audiophile Audition
It belongs with Bartók and Lutoslawski as one of the great Concerto for Orchestra's of the twentieth century. The Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma under the leadership of Francesco La Vecchia perform with conviction and the sound on this disc is of audiophile quality. One of the best discs of the year that will leave you wanting to explore more Casella.

Chicago Tribune
The two newest entries in Naxos' worthwhile survey of Casella's orchestral works display both his neoclassical side and his early modernist bent. If you don't know Casella's music, these discs make an excellent starting point.
