Notes & Reviews:

Alessandro Stradella enjoyed such a high reputation during his career that he never lacked powerful patrons and commissions. Regarded by some as the Mozart of the 17th century, this compilation shows Stradella's impeccable musicianship even when no text is present. Newton Classic regulars Mario Ferraris and Angelo Ephrikian are soaked in the idiom, and offer pleasing, elegant performances.

This is a most illuminating collection if you want to trace the emergence of Baroque instrumental forms. But these works are also good listening - full of invention, more relaxed and even more tuneful than many of the "canonical" counterparts by the eminent Corelli. While bits and segments of this output have been recorded since, this release still stands alone in its comprehensiveness. Until other performers and labels take the hint and give us more up-to-date renditions, this set remains indispensable, certainly for reference.
