Notes & Reviews:
Dan Styffe is ranked among the foremost of the double bass players today. His ability to communicate musical refinement through the double bass is renowned. His new release contains material from solo, through chamber to concerto.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
To finish off, we now have a 29-minute concerto for bass and orchestra by Rolf Martinsson (b 1956), a Swedish composer. You have to listen closely, since it begins in the bass, growing gradually to the full orchestra. It is in the customary three movements and was written for Styffe, who plays it with his customary sensitivity to tone quality. That is really what this is about, the way sound and spare harmonies can be made to affect your attention and your feelings. This is all easy music to listen to, in its odd, touching way. I enjoyed it very much.
