Notes & Reviews:

Antonin Dvorak's "Cypresses" opus 1 was a cycle of 18 songs, and a source of enduring inspiration. Recorded in its entirety for the first time, this is "Cypresses" both in its original song version as well as in a lovely string quartet arrangement.

Gramophone Magazine, November 2012
What keeps this set from being a mere academic exercise is the quality of the performances...The Bennewitz Quartet is downright wonderful, with a perfect balance of warmth and objective clarity, using expressive rubatos so effectively that the group seems to love the music 100 per cent.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
The Bennewitz Quartet, founded in 1998, was named for violinist Antonin Bennewitz (1833- 1926), who was an important figure in the development of Czech string playing. The group, then, has a self-conscious connection with Czech music, and indeed, they promote this music through their choice of repertory, which includes little-known Czech composers like Dusik, Reicha, Haas, Ullmann, and Schulhoff. Their earlier recording of Janacek's quartets (along with Bartok's Fourth) was welcomed by Elaine Fine (S/O 2008), and this recording of Dvorak is just as satisfying. In the Dvorak I certainly prefer the Bennewitz for their better sound.
