Notes & Reviews:
This new album by Sergei Nakariakov was recorded in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Dahlem, Berlin in tribute and homage to his late mentor, the great Russian trumpeter Timofei Dokshizer. Sparkling, spectacular virtuoso works arranged for trumpet are featured here alongside lyrical works for flugelhorn, demonstrating Nakariakov's breadth of skill and expression.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
Nakariakov has already shown - especially in the amazing album No Limit (Nov/Dec 2000: 281) - his ability to play cello and bassoon music in the original octave on flugelhorn. Here he ends his program with Bruch's Kol Nidrei, a staple of the cello repertory. The musicianship is heart-rending, the technical accomplishment mind-boggling. The work's final passages begin with Nakariakov on a D below the bass clef staff - on flugelhorn, mind you - then he smoothly rises more than three octaves to an A above the treble. It is all done with utter calm and beauty. Just another headshaking moment in the latest offering by this phenomenal musician.
