Notes & Reviews:

Shostakovich was the greatest composer of the Soviet era and throughout his life walked a tightrope between satisfying the authorities and voicing the hopes and fears of the people. His two exuberant piano concertos are among his most accessible works and are coupled here with the Ninth Symphony, whose playful sense of both humor and irreverence was a distinct shock to the Soviet system.
