Notes & Reviews:
Following on the success of their 2011 release Nordic Sounds, Peter Dijkstra and the Swedish Radio Choir return with a second volume in the series, this time focusing on the use of traditional Swedish folk songs in contemporary choral music. The disc's repertoire ranges from Jan Sandström's arrangements of improvised folk songs of the Sami people - whose singing is among the earliest continuing vocal traditions of Europe - to recent works such as the sixteen-part Kosijat by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, one of the best-known contemporary composers in Finland. The disc concludes with Anders Hillborg's twelveminute Muoayiayaoum which explores a phonetic sequence of vowels that open and close. The level of vocal virtuosity that Dijkstra elicits from his singers is breathtaking and the choir's performances are a lesson in vocal precision.
BBC Music Magazine, December 2012
Traditional Swedish folksongs are interwoven with newer choral works.
Gramophone Magazine, November 2012
This is such a choral feast that one can only shake one's head in wonderment that such lovely music is so little known outside Scandinavia. The Swedish Radio Choir's reputation for flawless singing is as solid as ever and, under Peter Dijkstra's direction, it has become a powerful though flexible instrument capable of tremendously warm and gilded singing.
International Record Review, December 2012
The timbral and rhythmic precision of their performances does not prevent the singing from projecting a genuinely human warmth. The choir is responsive to the wide variety of styles represented here; one senses the singers' enjoyment.
American Record Guide, March / April 2013
Their peerless technical perfection, interpretive acumen, and incredible vocal versatility make this choir - and this release - extra- special. And, ah, the SOUND! Ear-boggling, shiver-me-timbers. If you've never wallowed in SA sound before, you don't know what you're missing; you simply can't imagine such sonic alchemy until you've heard it.
