Notes & Reviews:

Pianist Alessandro Mazzamuto was the winner of the first Lodovici prize, and this recording was part of his award. The Lodovici prize was established to recognize exceptional pianists who might not be the kind of performers who would win competitions.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Mazzamuto's program is just about the perfect overview of Rachmaninoff's piano music: the first and last opus number used for solo piano works, plus the largest work just about equidistant (time-wise) from each end. The five early Morceaux contain that most famous Prelude in C-sharp minor, along with the often heard 'Elegie' (also on the second disc here). I was most pleased that the third and fifth pieces ('Melodie' and 'Serenade') are played in their original versions, as they should be when the complete opus is performed. Rachmaninoff revised both late in life, and made them significantly better. The Corelli Variations are even better. The performance kept my attention after many hearings. The sound of this SACD is outstanding, and the booklet notes are extensive and well written.
