Over 280 years after its first performance, Bach's St. Matthew Passion still exerts an unbroken hold over the imagination. This recording was produced at the work's historical home, St. Thomas Leipzig, and documents a longstanding tradition: the Thomanerchor and the Gewandhausorchester gather to perform one of Bach's magnificent passion settings on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday yearly.
