Couperin: Les Nations / Jed Wentz, Musica Ad Rhenum

Album Summary

>Couperin, François : Les Nations, sonatas & suites for 2 violins & continuo
Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Though Couperin was a contemporary of J.S. Bach, his fashionable life at Versailles could serve to make that great German seem quite stodgy. Always at the forefront of taste, Couperin's trendsetting is nowhere more evident than in his Les Nations, an overtly French set of trio pieces played stylishly here by Musica ad Rhenum with Jed Wentz.

American Record Guide, March / April 2013
Moonen and Borgstede play these preludes with an inspired sense of wonder. The preludes serve a dual purpose: to reflect on the otherworldly experience of the sonatas and they bring the listener back to earth. The dances benefit greatly from these tempos; they are especially buoyant, and the large sweep of the phrase is easily perceived. Musica Ad Rhenum plays with generous imagination. Listeners should expect to notice fascinating details they had not heard before each time they listen to this recording.

BBC Music Magazine, January 2013
A brilliant exploration of Couperin's Les nations, suites written to capture the temperaments of different nationalities. Each suite is charmingly done.
