Reza Vali: Toward That Endless Plain; Folk Songs Sets nos 8 & 14 / Janna Baty, soprano; Khosrow Soltani, Persian ney; BMOP

Notes & Reviews:

BMOP/sound presents the Persian-influenced compositions of Iranian-born Reza Vali in Toward That Endless Plain, featuring Persian new player Khosrow Soltani on the title track, as well as soprano Janna Baty in two pieces from Vali's Folk Songs cycle. Vali takes a decidedly modern approach to traditional music, having developed a computer-based Persian keyboard to combine the tunings of both western and Persian instruments. Gil Rose leads BMOP musicians in this recording sure to take its listeners on a journey through new music influenced by this distant land.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Moving from the United States to Iran, Reza Vali's songbook combines musical training in the Western tradition with traditional Persian music. A mixture of original and established folk songs permeates the two folk song sets. 'Love Song' from Set 8 requires the ensemble to play pitched crystal glasses, and the pitches need only be approximate as long as they ring well. The sweet singing of the mezzo-soprano is quickly followed by the thunderous, percussive 'Song from Luristan'. Set 14 uses a larger number of instrumentalists to accompany the singer, with the results sounding like orchestral settings of Broadway productions.
