Notes & Reviews:

"The allerfreieste and ungebundenste Set, singing and playing style" named Johann Mattheson 1739 "Stylus Phantasticus", and so he hits the nail on the head. Around 1700 was the style of the organ transferred to chamber music, and as played the viol an important role. Famous gamba virtuoso like August Kühnel took the liberty to put their instrument to his own compositions perfectly staged. Also Dieterich Buxtehude wrote charming trio sonatas, where is expressly viol prescribed as a second solo voice. Finally she put the great Johann Sebastian Bach effectively in his 'St. Matthew Passion' a. Frauke Hess and her colleagues develop with their new recording of all colors baroque viol music.

American Record Guide, March / April 2013
It includes sonatas by Philipp Heinrich Erlebach, August Michael Kühnel, and Buxtehude; a concerto by Johan Michael Kühnel; and from JS Bach's St Matthew Passion, we have the recitative ' Ja Freilich Will in Uns das Fleisch und Blut' and aria 'Komm, Süsses Kreuz'. With such variety, Frauke Hess is able to show the versatility of the viol, from its function as a continuo instrument to its virtuosity in trio sonata textures. The playing is absolutely brilliant. Notes are in English.
