Notes & Reviews:

Smoke & Mirrors takes us on a journey of the breadth of contemporary classical music written for percussionists. The recording was captured using a single AKG C 24 stereo microphone in the glorious acoustics of Zipper Hall. Each piece was recorded live to tape with no editing, to create a lifelike performance.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
Steve Reich is represented by his 'Nagoya Marimbas' and Music for Pieces of Wood; 'Marimbas' is well played, with a sense of urgency; the other is just that - rhythms played on hollow wood sticks. Lou Harrison's Canticle No. 3 is almost a concerto for ocarina, steel-string guitar, and percussion ensemble. And there's plenty of space in it for meditation. Eric Whitacre's choral work 'Sleep' is here in a transcription for two marimbas and five players. Derek Tywoniuk's Happenstance is a four-movement piece for four players on two marimbas. The pulse in 'Introduction' is derived from minimalism Takemitsu's Rain Tree is part of his "Waterscape" series; it's ethereal and gentle, quite descriptive of the title. Ravel's Sonatine is a transcription for percussion ensemble.
