Notes & Reviews:
In this world premiere recording, the three-time Grammy winner composer Michael Colina does it again with a stunning new release. "The LSO plays brilliantly...and this is not easy music. Colina is a real find, and it is amazing that anyone's first outing into the classical world, I don't care what you have done before, is so assured and confidant. Highest recommendation." American Record Guide, January/February 2013
Colina is a Grammy-winning producer of jazz and Latin-American music (his discography includes David Sanborn). Performances by soloists and orchestra alike are fine, particularly Khitruk, the violinist on Baby Yaga. The Russian tale has been adapted to a tone poem with the violin, which is the young girl as she wanders through the woods and encounters the hut on chicken legs. Each piece on the record has some sort of plot, narrative, or theme behind it, and each sounds like the score to an animated science-fiction movie. Quinta Del Sordo is not nearly as terrifying as the 'Black Paintings' of Francisco Goya, for which it was written.
Recording information: Abbey Road Studios, London, England.
